Pulse Check: Emerging Technology in September 2019

The Momenta Pulse Check series highlights recent developments in the Digital Industry. Pulse Checks are designed to help you keep track of the ever-changing and rapidly growing global Digital Industry. Our weekly Pulse Checks delve into one of four categories: Digital Industry, Emerging Technology, Talent and Ventures

In this week’s Pulse Check, we have highlighted notable recent developments pertaining to Emerging Technology. Digital transformation has become increasingly integral to overall business strategy and we want to help you understand the technologies driving overall market innovation. Announcements in commercial aviation, smart tech and industrial IoT (IIoT) are discussed as well. In addition, we have elaborated on the recent rollout of the new Wi-Fi standard, Wi-Fi Certified 6.

Airbus embracing connected cabin capabilities:

The 2019 APEX EXPO – an airline passenger experience conference – was held from September 9th-12thin Los Angeles, California. At the expo, Airbus demonstrated its IoT-enabled connected cabin capabilities and subsequently began testing its connected cabin on a A350-900 flight-test aircraft. Airbus is aiming to enhance customer experience by personalizing passenger engagement (e.g. pre-ordering meals, compartment space reservation) while enabling airlines to generate revenues from personalized in-flight advertisements. If connected cabin capabilities can truly have a positive impact on passenger engagement, Airbus will have established itself as a potentially innovative player in aerospace manufacturing. Aviation is a sub-area of transportation that we will continue to track in the context of Digital Industry and IoT.

Hitachi introduces its industrial IoT (IIoT) solutions suite:

On September 10th, Hitachi’s digital transformation and IoT subsidiary, Hitachi Vantara, announced the release of Lumada, its new IIoT solutions suite. Utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), Lumada is advertised as being able to help industrial companies move away from inefficient legacy systems. Given the constant challenge of integration in the context of IIoT, Hitachi Vantara’s introduction of Lumada is unsurprising. We expect that more connected/tech solutions companies will look to enhance their IIoT suites given the strong impact that IoT can have on optimizing industrial operations. Industrial Internet Consortium unveils plans to expedite IIoT adoption:

Last week, the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) announced an initiative to increase IIoT adoption. To achieve this, the IIC launched its Accelerator Program to help create more seamless IIoT implementation for end-user companies. Given the abundance of legacy infrastructure still currently utilized by industrial companies, the coordinated effort put forth by the IIC is an important development in proliferating IIoT. IIC members include some of the world’s most prominent multinational corporations.

Wi-Fi 6 is now available:

On September 16th, the Wi-Fi Alliance announced that its Wi-Fi Certified 6 standard had begun its rollout. Based on the IEEE 802.11ax standard, Wi-Fi 6 is considered to be a key development for the increased utilization of IoT, specifically as it relates to low-power connectivity. Perhaps the most notable benefit offered via Wi-Fi 6 is the enablement of lower battery consumption for devices and enhanced data rate transfer. The Wi-Fi Alliance advertises Wi-Fi 6 as delivering connectivity capabilities for dense areas and useful for various operations such as manufacturing and remote monitoring.
