2019 continues to be an eventful year in Connected Industry. The U.S. economy continues to show strength, with record low unemployment and stock indexes reaching new highs. Concerns over shortages of skilled labor continue to drive interest in automation and Connected Industry solutions in order to boost productivity and effectiveness. Automation, AI and connected solutions for predictive maintenance will be critical to address the labor gap in coming years.
There has not been much activity in terms of M&A, although Microsoft announced the acquisition of Express Logic, a provider of real-time operating systems (RTOS) for micro-controller units (MCUs). According to the company, the deal will “unlock access to billions of new connected endpoints” as well as “grow the number of devices that can seamlessly connect to Azure and enable new intelligent capabilities”.
5G continues to grab headlines as potential transformative technology, but there continues to be a lot of debate as to the benefits. The potential use cases offer enormous appeal in AI-intensive areas like self-driving cars, manufacturing and industrial uses. There’s a lot of creative vision at work ahead of broader market adoption. However, as a measure of how early the technology is, Verizon is offering a $1mn reward for the best 5G business idea, suggesting that it will take time for viable use cases to emerge. There are also other key advances in connectivity: The Wireless Broadband Alliance has launched the first of a series of Wi-Fi 6 trials for industrial enterprise and the IoT at Mettis Aerospace’s 27-acre facility in the West Midlands starting in the second half of 2019. Use cases under consideration include: multi-stream live video monitoring, real-time energy monitoring, ultra-reliable low latency communications with sensors on critical systems, and augmented reality.
